Asked if she supports President Joe Biden’s policy change on military aid to Israel, Harris simply answered “no.”
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday, in her first interview as a Democratic presidential candidate, firmly rejected the idea of a U.S. arms embargo on Israel as it continues its ten-month-long genocide in Gaza.
In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris expressed her unwavering support for Israel and its ability to defend itself.
“I am unequivocal and unwaveringly committed to preserving Israel’s defense and its ability to defend itself, and that will not change,” the vice president told CNN.
Asked if she supports President Joe Biden’s policy change on military aid to Israel, Harris simply answered “no.”
While acknowledging that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed,” with the official death toll in Gaza at more than 40,000, Harris still supports Israel’s right to self-defense.

“I will say today that Israel has the right to defend itself. We will do that, but how we do it is important,” the vice president said.
The Vice President reiterated the country’s position on the urgent need to reach a ceasefire agreement.
“We have to make a deal. We are in Doha. We have to make a deal. This war has to end and we have to make a deal to get the hostages out. I have met with the families of the American hostages. Let’s get the hostages out. Let’s get a ceasefire,” Harris said.
According to the presidential candidate, a ceasefire agreement ending the war “will solve many of the problems that come next.”
She expressed her commitment to ending the conflict between Israel and Palestine through a two-state solution.
“Since taking office on October 8, I have been committed to working towards a two-state solution where Israel is secure while Palestinians enjoy equal security, self-determination and dignity,” she said.

“Israel has the right to defend itself”
Kamala Harris’ latest statement is consistent with her earlier statements on the topic, in which she reiterated her support for Israel’s right to self-defense during her nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
On August 22, she told tens of thousands of party members at the closing ceremony of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago: “I will always defend Israel’s right to defend itself, and I will always ensure that Israel has the ability to defend itself.”
She stressed, “Let me be clear, I will always defend Israel’s right to self-defense, and I will always ensure Israel is able to defend itself,” stressing that Israelis “should never again” experience the horrific and “unspeakable” attack of October 7.
Her comments resonated with pro-Palestinian delegates who were denied a chance to speak at the DNC, with Ilhan Omar harshly condemning the U.S. government for supporting a ceasefire while continuing to supply weapons to Israel.
The night before the DNC closed, delegates staged a sit-in outside the DNC, demanding that Palestinian Americans be allowed to speak out about the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
“We have been asking the Democratic National Convention for a Palestinian-American to speak on this stage,” Abbas Alawieh, a Michigan delegate and member of the Indomitable National Movement, said in a video posted on X on Aug. 22, the final day of the convention.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Chicago on Monday night after U.S. President Joe Biden pledged to continue working “day and night” to end the war in Gaza during his farewell speech to the Democratic National Convention.
In a statement on its website, protest organizers said the “March to the DNC 2024” banner said, “The March to the DNC coalition stands in unconditional solidarity with the Palestinian resistance and we demand an end to the use of American taxpayer dollars to fund Israel’s apartheid occupation and genocide against Palestine.”
The statement added: “Joe Biden and the Democratic Party are responsible for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.”
In addition to financial support, Biden and the U.S. government “have provided unconditional political support to the genocidal actions of the Israeli apartheid regime,” the statement said.
The U.S. government will provide Israel with $3.5 billion to buy American weapons and military equipment during Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, which has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians.
Several human rights groups and former State Department officials have urged the Biden administration to suspend arms transfers to Israel, arguing that it violates international law and human rights.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza
Israel has faced international condemnation as it continues its brutal offensive against Gaza in defiance of a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Israel, which is currently on trial in the International Court of Justice for genocide against Palestinians, has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip since October 7.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 40,602 Palestinians have Killed93,855 people have been injured in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, which began on October 7.
In addition, at least 11,000 people remain missing in the Gaza Strip, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes.
Israel said that 1,200 soldiers and civilians died in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7. Israeli media reported that many Israelis were killed by “friendly fire” that day.
Palestinian and international organizations said most of the dead and injured were women and children.
The Israeli war led to severe famine, mainly in northern Gaza, and killed many Palestinians, most of them children.
The Israeli aggression has also resulted in the displacement of nearly 2 million people across the Gaza Strip, with the vast majority of the displaced forced into the densely populated southern city of Rafah near the Egyptian border, the largest Palestinian exodus since the 1948 Nakba.
In the later stages of the war, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians began to migrate from southern Gaza to central Gaza in search of safety.
