Many Canadian Football League fans called it a Hamilton Tiger-Catsthey failed to reach the level of defending the title Grey Cup Friday night champion.
20,426 fans at Tim Hortons Field watched Montreal Skylark The Ticats were defeated 33-16, improving to a league-best 7-1. The loss ended Hamilton’s two-game winning streak and dropped the Cats to 2-6 on the season.
The two teams will face off again in a Week 10 rematch on August 10 in Montreal.
Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell struggled against the Alouettes defense, completing 29 of 42 passes for 240 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Mitchell completed just two passes of more than 15 yards, while Montreal completed 10 passes of more than 15 yards.
Davis Alexander, making his first CFL start in place of injured Alouettes quarterback Cody Fajardo, went 19-of-27 for 262 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The interception was picked off by Hamilton defensive back Kenneth George Jr., who returned the ball 18 yards to the end zone to give the Ticats a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
About six minutes later, Alexander teamed up with receiver Charleston Rambo for a 24-yard touchdown to tie the game and wipe out the lead.

Montreal backup center Caleb Evans ran for a one-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to linebacker David Dallaire to make it 27-8. Evans left the game with less than two minutes left because of a right knee injury.
With 2:45 left, Mitchell passed the ball to Tim White for the only touchdown of the game.
About a minute later, Alouettes running back Walter Fletcher capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
Friday’s win was Montreal’s seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.
