The Israeli military said Thursday that it had killed the head of Hamas’ military wing, Mohammad Dave, in an airstrike in July.

“We can now confirm: Mohammad Dave has been neutralized,” IDF Posted on its official X account.

The Israeli military said it had spent weeks trying to confirm whether Deif, who was targeted in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, was killed in the blast. Hamas denied that Deif was dead. When contacted by CNBC, Hamas did not immediately comment on the IDF’s statement on Thursday.

Israel says Dave and Hamas chief in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, were the main planners of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 people and took 253 hostages. About 116 of them have been released.

The October attack sparked a war between Israel and Hamas that is now in its tenth month, with Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip killing more than 39,000 people, according to the local government.

The IDF announcement came a day after Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an attack in Tehran that Hamas and Iran said was carried out by Israel, while the Jewish state refused to comment on Haniyeh’s death.
