The Palestinian group Hamas announced that its political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran.

“Hamas brother, leader, movement leader Mojahid Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a Zionist attack on its headquarters in Tehran after attending the inauguration of the new Iranian president,” the world body quoted Hamas as saying.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also announced Haniyeh’s death. A message posted on the force’s website said one of his bodyguards was killed along with the Hamas leader. The organization has not yet explained how the attack that killed the Hamas leader was carried out.

Israeli authorities have remained silent on Haniyeh’s death. IDF press attaché Major General Daniel Hagari wrote only on social media X that the IDF was “assessing the situation.”

Some Arab media reported that Haniyeh was killed by a direct missile attack, but the news has not been confirmed.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas strongly condemned the killing of Haniyeh and announced retaliatory measures, according to Palestinian agency WAFA.

It is worth noting that Haniyeh is the leader of Hamas and can be seen in the footage shot with Irakli Kobachidze.
