It is almost certain that Hala Thomasdottir will become Iceland’s next president, but with 86,551 votes now counted, or about half of the votes, she has a significant advantage over Katrina Jakobsdottir. Hala has 32.4% of the votes, while Katrin has 26.3%, but the latter has already congratulated Hala on her victory in the election.
Most people were expecting an exciting and tense election night, but it is clear that Halla has been wavering over the past few days, and those who chose the president in the final meters of the campaign have almost certainly sided with her. Halla Hrund (15.4%) and Baldur Þórhalls (8.1%) received significantly less support than the polls predicted, and perhaps it can be concluded that many people who intended to vote for them thought that their vote would be better spent on Hallu Tómasdóttir.
Halla ran a great campaign, stayed positive and did a great job. Her following started small but grew each week, eventually reaching its peak on election day.
