The vast majority of Icelanders have a positive attitude towards Iceland’s joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). However, more than half of the public are opposed to Iceland providing direct military support to Ukraine.

Opposition to military support has increased since last year, when 39 percent were against it. The debate on the eve of Iceland’s presidential election drew attention to the fact that President Halla Thomasdottir opposed military support for Ukraine.

However, 74.6% of respondents said they supported Iceland’s support for Ukraine’s war with Russia, while 9.4% were against it. In addition, 86.2% of Icelanders supported providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Few people oppose Iceland joining NATO

However, Icelanders generally strongly support Iceland’s defense cooperation with other Western countries.

64.1% of Icelanders have a positive attitude towards Iceland joining NATO, and only 11.2% have a negative attitude.

The survey also asked about attitudes toward a defense agreement with the United States and Iceland’s military exercises.

Majority favors defense cooperation with the U.S.

As it happens, the “Norður Víkingur” defense exercise begins today and will last until September 3. 1,200 people from Iceland, the United States and allied countries will participate, and the exercise is based on a defense agreement between the United States and Iceland that dates back to 1951.

Only 18.3% of Icelanders were against defense cooperation with the United States, while 52.8% were in favor.

In addition, 44.3% of Icelanders support holding military exercises in the country, while 25.8% are opposed.
