The ECC panel recommended that the sanctions be reported to Haitian judicial authorities as part of judicial cooperation targeting corruption, financial crime and gangs in Haiti.
The Haitian judiciary expressed regret over the sanctions imposed on Michel Martelly by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac) of the United States Treasury Department for “drug trafficking, money laundering and gang sponsorship”.
“This decision came too late,” said Paultre, who said he was not surprised that the United States officially announced sanctions against Martelli on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.
In an official press release, the U.S. Treasury Department’s OFAC emphasized that U.S. financial institutions are not allowed to provide loans or credit to Martelly.
