HAITI – POLITICS: Insecurity prevents Colombian president from visiting Haiti

On Friday, August 16, 2024, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, known for his commitment to international solidarity, took the opportunity of attending the inauguration of the re-elected President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, to express his intention to travel to Haiti to personally understand the situation and explore possible avenues of cooperation.
However, the Haitian Government, aware of the security challenges facing the country, suggested postponing the visit until conditions were more favourable.
Haiti’s security crisis has led to frequent violence and chaos, attracting regional and international attention. Haitian authorities said they could not guarantee the security required for the president’s visit, which led Petro to postpone his visit.
The Haitian Government thanked the Colombian President for his concern and expressed the hope that the visit could go ahead smoothly in the near future when the situation improves.
