P-au-P, August 13, 2024 (AlterPresse) – In the context of International Youth Day, Haiti encourages young people to actively participate in community life and take their destiny into their own hands, Monday, August 12, 2024, according to information collected by the online agency AlterPresse in Port-au-Prince.
On this occasion, the International Observatory of Democracy and Governance (Oidg) will organize a series of ten participatory research workshops across Haiti on democracy and governance in Haiti.
Oidg explained in a message that the workshops are aimed at gathering the views and expectations of young people, community leaders and other key stakeholders, better understanding their needs and aligning our actions accordingly.
These actions will make it possible to establish governance and democracy training programs that will truly meet the aspirations of the Haitian people.
Oidg claims that it encourages “young people to participate in citizen monitoring through independent media, civil society organizations or social networks to increase transparency and accountability of public actors.”
“Such engagement must go hand in hand with strengthening government institutions, through the introduction of legislative reforms and more effective control mechanisms, as well as promoting a truly independent judiciary.”
These efforts are “critical to creating an environment in which democracy, good governance, and equity can flourish.”
The International Observatory on Democracy and Governance considers it vital that “young people actively participate in politics by running for office and holding their leaders accountable.”
“Their participation in the decision-making process is essential to building a society where young people are not only beneficiaries and observers but also important actors in change.”
Oidg stressed that this day “reminds young people of the importance of expressing themselves, receiving training and being an active participant in the decisions that will shape their future.
In a message published on the occasion of International Youth Day 2024, the UN Youth Africa Office in Haiti (Bojnuah) invites all Haitians, especially young people, to take control of their own destiny and give themselves to the legal means of determining the future of this great country and participating in its good governance, especially in these extremely difficult times, instead of always being puppets of actresses and political actors who often do not contribute anything to the Haitian people, but are responsible for them.
“Young people must also be at the center of debate and decision-making about Haiti’s recovery.”
Bojnoa invites them to “be more involved and show a fervent desire to live together, with the sole awareness that we are all Haitians, everywhere and at all times. In short, the future of our dear homeland will be possible only if and only if special attention is paid to Haitian youth and the gerontocracy that is deeply rooted in our country is eliminated immediately and quickly.
“Youth plays a decisive role in leveraging technology to serve sustainable development” is the theme of International Youth Day 2024.
The United Nations General Assembly designated August 12 as today, following a recommendation by the World Conference of Youth Ministers in December 1999. (emb April 13, 2024 07:00)
