P-au-P, May 31, 2024 (AlterPresse) – The newly appointed transitional Prime Minister, Garry Conille, pledges to establish a non-partisan government that encourages the participation of women, young people and the diaspora, in a pre-recorded video in Creole published on social networks and viewed by the online agency AlterPresse.
Cornell declared that women, young people and the diaspora are important constituencies in Haiti and must be involved and effectively represented in the new transitional government, which needs capable, pragmatic and honest professionals.
The Presidential Transition Council (Cep) officially elected Garry Conille as Prime Minister for the transition period on May 28, 2024, according to a decree published on Thursday, May 30, 2024 in Le Moniteur, the official newspaper of the Republic.
“The average age of the Haitian population is 23 years old. Therefore, young people must be adequately represented. More than half of the population are women. Women must find their place in the government and they must be present. The diaspora represents a huge support for the country’s economy. They must also find their place in this government,” stressed the new transitional Prime Minister.
Gary Cornier said Haiti’s next transitional government must reflect “the courage, generosity, resilience and diversity of the Haitian people.”
“Despite the huge challenges we face, the country has just taken a big step forward, with an agreement among different sectors of society that have hitherto opposed to appoint an independent, non-partisan figure who can help build democracy in Haiti,” he said, welcoming the new prime minister.
Gary Cornier insisted that the crisis is terrible but “not inevitable for Haiti” and he pledged to work perfectly with members of the Presidential Transition Council (Cpt) to solve the urgent problems facing Haiti.
He acknowledged that the country was going through a very difficult period, noting how armed groups that had occupied large parts of the metropolitan area of the capital, Port-au-Prince, were killing and raping women and girls with impunity, despite countless sacrifices by the national police to stop them.
Thousands (as opposed to the “hundreds” mentioned by Gary Conille) of his compatriots (children, women, men) have been forced to leave their homes due to the terror of armed gangs (about 400,000 people have been displaced since 2023). Garry Conille regrets that he is living on the streets without support.
The new transitional prime minister made no promises, for example on the thorny issue of the total impunity with which armed groups across Haiti have been committing crimes, terror and other violence for months.
At least 2,505 people were killed or injured in gang-related violence between January and March 2024, a 53% increase from the previous quarter (October to December 2023), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti said in a report dated April 19, 2024.
