P-au-P., July 17, 2024 (AlterPresse) – Prime Minister Gary Cornier announced on the evening of July 17, 2024 that the government has declared a state of security emergency in 14 municipalities controlled by Haitian gangs.

About 80% of the capital’s metropolitan area (consisting of seven cities) is in the hands of gangs in a coalition called “Viv ansanm” (living together).
Cornell paints a catastrophic picture of the criminal banditry that is spreading terror in Haiti.
The Head of Government assured that the measures taken will mark a turning point in the fight against insecurity and gang violence to restore peace.
Gary Cornell said all law enforcement agencies have been mobilized to eradicate armed gangs. The police, army and multinational forces will carry out joint operations with the support of national intelligence agencies.

Haitian leaders asked residents of cities affected by the security emergency to cooperate with police. They were asked to remain alert, remain calm and pay attention to security instructions that will be transmitted through official networks.
The Prime Minister asked journalists “especially on social media” to avoid spreading strategic information that could serve gangsters.
He again called on the bandits to lay down their arms and recognise the authority of the state.
A security state of emergency was declared 48 hours after a new contingent of 200 Kenyan police officers arrived in Port-au-Prince, in addition to the 200 police officers already in Haiti since the end of June.
Haitian and Kenyan law enforcement agencies conducted a joint patrol in downtown Port-au-Prince on July 17. Reporters noticed that they were riding in about ten majestic armored vehicles.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in gang violence over the past three years, according to data compiled by various United Nations reports. This violence has intensified in recent months with the relentless attacks of a coalition of gangs called Vivansanm.
