The World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health confirmed in a joint statement that the information currently available shows that the risk posed to public health by the influenza virus H5N1, also known as avian influenza in humans, has a low infection rate.
The statement released today in Geneva added that the risk of infection for occupational contacts is low to moderate, based on existing risk mitigation measures.
He noted that transmission of infection between animals continues and that a limited number of human cases have been reported so far.
The statement said that although more human infections linked to contact with infected animals or contaminated environments may continue to occur, the overall impact of these infections on global public health is small.
