Guyana continues to make significant strides in the global tourism industry, particularly in the area of sustainable tourism. The country is recognized as a leading natural and sustainable tourism destination, receiving international acclaim for its commitment to responsible and environmentally friendly tourism practices.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations World Tourism Organization, sustainable tourism is tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts. It meets the needs of tourists, the tourism industry, the environment and host communities, ensuring a balance that benefits all stakeholders.
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond last weekend highlighted the government’s commitment to this vision and stressed that sustaining this extraordinary transformation requires a joint effort. “By working together and dedicating our energy and resources, we can continue to drive this amazing transformation in the tourism industry,” Minister Walrond said.
As part of the Government’s ongoing initiatives, Minister Walrond announced plans to explore the potential of glamping – an activity that blends glamping and camping – as a new attraction in Guyana.
“Next month, a team of experts will travel to Guyana to assess the feasibility of a number of sites across the country and ultimately present a business case for investment. We need to raise the standard of hotels. We already have world-class tourist attractions and assets, we need facilities and amenities of commensurate value,” she explained.
To further these efforts, the Minister disclosed that, starting in the last quarter of this year, the Government will intensify its efforts to ensure that world-class eco-lodges are designed specifically for Guyana’s unique environment. In addition, the $7 million Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute, which will offer accredited courses designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of those in the industry, is set to be completed in the new year.
Minister Walrond also highlighted the important partnership between government and the private sector in building a strong and sustainable tourism industry. “Our collaboration is vital as we continue to build a strong and sustainable tourism industry in Guyana. Together, we have the power to shape an exciting future for our country, one that will see Guyana become a premier destination for eco-tourism, cultural exploration and some of the most authentic and unusual adventures,” she affirmed.
This dedication to sustainable tourism has not gone unnoticed. Guyana has been the recipient of numerous international awards, including the 2024 Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) International Tourism Awards in Berlin, Germany. Other accolades include titles such as Best Ecotourism Destination, Best Sustainable Tourism and Best Adventure. In 2024 alone, Guyana was nominated for eight international awards, further solidifying its reputation on the global stage.
The Guyana Tourism Authority also won a Silver Award in the “Best Indigenous Tourism and Traditional Communities Initiative” category at the fourth World Travel Market (WTM) Latin American Responsible Tourism Awards.
“Our goal is to ensure that Guyana is not only known for its stunning scenery and rich culture, but also serves as an example of how tourism can contribute to the overall development of a destination. We look forward to a future where our tourism industry thrives, thanks to innovative initiatives and a strong commitment to protecting our natural and cultural heritage,” said Minister Walrond.
As Guyana continues to invest in infrastructure, step up its marketing efforts, and support initiatives that promote responsible and sustainable tourism, the country is poised to lead the world in creating a tourism industry that is both economically viable and environmentally sustainable.
