Guterres expresses concern over deteriorating humanitarian situation in North Darfur

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has expressed deep concern over the rapid developments in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state, in a statement today, Guterres stressed that these clashes pose a major threat to the civilian population, further complicating the humanitarian situation in the region, noting that the fighting will worsen the humanitarian situation in El Fasher and surrounding areas.

The Secretary-General called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, urging them to protect civilians, ensure their safe passage and facilitate rapid access to humanitarian assistance.

He reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a permanent ceasefire, stressing the need to return to political dialogue as the only solution to a peaceful settlement.

He also stressed the United Nations’ commitment to continue supporting international mediation efforts and working with the parties to end the conflict.
