At least three South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) officers were killed in an ambush by unidentified gunmen in Nasir County, Upper Nile State.
Initial reports circulating online on Wednesday said that local armed militias, the White Army, had clashed with national troops. However, SSPDF spokesman Major General Lul Ruai Koang refuted the claims in a text message to Radio Tamazuj.
“The SSPDF did not fight the armed youths, but some officers and their bodyguards who were heading to Nasir town were ambushed by unidentified gunmen on their way to the military camp,” Koang explained.
“The ambush resulted in the death of three officers and another injured. The casualties included two majors and a regimental sergeant major (R/SM).”
Separately, MP Reath Muoch Tang, who represents Nasir County, expressed concern on Wednesday about violence in Nasir County, saying fighting had taken place between civilians and SSPDF soldiers in the area. The MP called on the national government to intervene.
The incident highlights the security challenges currently facing the country. The reasons behind the violence in Nasir County are still unclear.
