The attack took place in the Kusakhail district this evening. The gunmen set fire to at least 10 vehicles before fleeing the scene. No one has claimed responsibility for the violence, but Balochistan separatists often kill laborers and other migrants from Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province to force them out of Pakistan’s southern Balochistan province. Punjabis are Pakistan’s most populous ethnic group.
In May, gunmen in Balochistan shot dead seven men from Punjab province, all of whom were barbers. A month earlier, the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the killing of nine construction workers from Punjab who were kidnapped from a bus.
Balochistan has for years been the scene of an insurgency by separatist groups demanding independence from the government in Islamabad. Islamist militants are also active in the province.
