JIGJIGGA (HOL) – Two Somalis were killed and several others injured when gunmen attacked a bus in Awash town in the eastern Afar region of Ethiopia on Sunday.
According to local sources, the bus was carrying passengers to Addis Ababa when the attack occurred, including seven Somalis from Ethiopia’s Somali state.
Two of the victims were identified as Khadar Elmi Cige and Mawlid Mohamed Abdi, while several others were injured, including Ismail Muhammed Musa, Sayid Muhammed Musa and Ali Hussein Jama. Some of the victims were prominent business figures in the Somali region of Ethiopia.
Local officials have accused armed groups in the Afar region of killing Somalis, but that claim has not been independently confirmed.
Somalis travelling from Jig-Jiga to Addis Ababa are advised to take a flight as the long-standing border conflict between Ethiopia’s Afar and Somali regions has been escalating over the past few months with no signs of a negotiated solution to the conflict.
