Conakry, July 26 (Xinhua) — Amara Camara, Secretary-General of the Guinean Presidential Palace, said on the 26th that December 31, 2024 does not mean the end of the transition period that began after the Guinean army seized power on September 5, 2021.
Camara told a news conference that the “dynamic compromise” reached with member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) included “recalibrating the transition timetable for each phase.”
“Every time we reach a stage, we sit down with ECOWAS to reassess and make adjustments,” Camara said.
He noted that elections aimed at ending the transition period must be held in an environment of peace, social tranquility and harmony. “We will work to ensure peace so that today’s transition process is not interrupted.”
Government spokesman Ousmane Gaual Diallo said Guinea’s government intends to organize a referendum “before the end of this year” to draft a constitution for the country as a prelude to organizing elections.
In an interview on March 12, Prime Minister Bach Ori estimated that there was still “a lot of work to be done” to complete the transition timetable, and he believed that 2025 would be “a good time to bring the whole process to a successful conclusion.”
After taking office on September 5, 2021, the National Reconciliation and Development Council of Guinea’s ruling military government announced that it would transfer power on December 31, 2024.
