Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insisted on Tuesday that his midfielder Kevin De Bruyne will not leave the club despite rumours that he could be headed to Saudi Arabia.

The Belgian player has just one year left on his contract with the current Premier League champions and in an interview with Belgian media HLN in early June, he revealed that he had spoken to his wife Michelle about future plans.

“Michel would agree to an exotic adventure,” the Belgian blurted out, a statement interpreted as a possible clue to the withdrawal.

Several media outlets have since reported that Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad are interested in acquiring the services of the player, who has been key to City’s recent success.

But in the early hours of Tuesday morning, British media reported that Guardiola has ruled out the possibility of the 33-year-old leaving this season.

Ahead of North Carolina’s friendly against Glasgow Celtic, Guardiola’s statement was emphatic: “Kevin is not leaving.”

The Belgian arrived in Manchester from Wolfsburg in 2015 and has since been a protagonist in winning 15 major titles, including six Premier Leagues and a Champions League.

Despite Guardiola’s tough stance on the Belgian’s continuity, the player’s ongoing rumours and statements threaten to kick off a soap opera ahead of the Premier League season’s start on August 16.

“At my age, you have to be open to everything. We are talking about huge amounts of money that I could potentially get at the end of my career (…) If I play there for two years, I will be able to earn an incredible amount of money.” “Incredible amounts”, declares the Manchester City and Belgium team logo ahead of the 2024 European Championship.
