According to the World Health Organization’s latest malaria report, the Solomon Islands has more than 160,000 cases of malaria each year, and despite the government’s plan to eliminate malaria by 2030, the country has yet to adapt to the mosquitoes’ new behavior.
The Guadalcanal Vector-Borne Disease Control Project recently donated eight packages of mosquito nets to the Solomon Islands Correctional Services (CSSI) at the Guadalcanal depot in Honiara.
The nets will be distributed to inmates at Rove Central Correctional Centre to help control and eliminate malaria.
The Office of the Commissioner of CSSI expresses its gratitude for the generous donation and coordination of mosquito net distribution to the Vector-Borne Disease Control Program in Guadalcanal Province.
Francis Panat, director of the Guadalcanal Province Vector-Borne Disease Control Program, said the mosquito nets are meant to protect prisoners from malaria and help stop the spread of malaria within the prison.
Solomon Islands Commissioner for Safety and Security, Mr. Mactus Folau, thanked the Guadalcanal Provincial Vector-Borne Disease Control Program for its support in controlling malaria in prisons. He also thanked the Government of Australia for its continued support in helping to control and move towards malaria elimination in Solomon Islands.
