The Guadalcanal Provincial Government (GPG) held a ceremony at DC Park yesterday to mark the 40th anniversary of Guadalcanal.

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele graced the event as guest of honour while other guests included government officials and members of the public.

Prime Minister Manele spoke at the ceremony and congratulated the province on its 40th anniversary. He appreciated the province’s contribution to the country.

“I thank the people of Guadalcanal for accepting the significant investments from GPPOL, Gold Ridge, Tina Hydro, and most importantly the City of Honiara.”

Manele stressed that Honiara’s population growth was an issue that needed to be addressed.

“The increase in Honiara’s population has put a lot of pressure on Guadalcanal as people come to Honiara in search of jobs and economic opportunities.

“Guadalcanal, Honiara and the national government must seriously look at this problem and find a solution,” he said.

The Prime Minister then called on the province and people to continue working with the national government to improve livelihoods in the province and the country.

Meanwhile, Guadalcanal Prime Minister Willie Attu stressed that the celebrations provided an opportunity to reflect on past experiences.

“This annual event provides us with an opportunity to reflect on past experiences, current events and chart a new direction for the future of our beloved province.

“For the Province of Guadalcanal, the past 40 years have been marked by many achievements as well as many challenges. For this, I want to thank God for his leadership and care for the people of Guadalcanal,” said Prime Minister Attu.

The celebration also coincided with the launch of the government’s policy document on good governance.

SIBC News has learned that the second designation date marks the establishment of Guadalcanal as a province on August 1, 1984.
