In Grenoble, a knife-wielding man was seriously injured by bullets from pursuing police officers after an attack on Sunday night. The man suffered injuries to his back, shoulder and chest and is in critical condition. He was transferred to hospital for surgery.

The manager of a city centre business reportedly raised the alarm at around 4am after being attacked by a man with a knife. Information from the regional daily Le Dauphiné LibéréA member of the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) spotted him in his car on Beriart Avenue, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. A police officer got out of his car and followed him, while vehicles drove past him and stopped in front of him. Then the purser went downstairs one by one.

The suspect, whose age was not specified, “walked towards the police with a knife in his hand. Despite the officers forbidding him to drop the weapon, he continued to move forward,” a police source said. According to the source, one or two police officers then opened fire, but the exact course of events was unclear.

The Grenoble prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into another executive from the National Police General Inspectorate (IGPN), linked to “the circumstances of the shooting”, according to the same source.
