To mark World Dog Day, celebrated around the world on August 26, the Green Party stressed the importance of protecting dogs and the need to enforce existing laws.

The party has repeatedly called for legislation to ensure people who commit crimes against animals are brought to justice.

The party also stressed in a statement released on Monday that the lack of a comprehensive and strict legal framework has created opportunities for individuals to exploit legal loopholes, leading to crimes such as dog abuse and killing.

The current Dog Breeding Law is being discussed in Parliament, but due to some problems it has not been submitted to the plenary session for a vote.

The party also called for “the immediate removal of euthanasia provisions from the law and the swift establishment of regional shelters”.

In addition, the statement stressed the importance of correct identification of animals and the need to prohibit uncontrolled breeding, and called for increased penalties for abusing or killing animals under animal welfare laws, “which should be considered serious crimes.”

Furthermore, the party stressed the need to immediately modernise and strengthen the animal police force.

“Officials in this position should have a strong sense of animal welfare and receive appropriate training through dedicated programs and assessments,” the statement said, further advocating for the establishment of an independent agency with its own equipment specifically responsible for animal welfare issues.

“We ask the authorities to enforce the law and impose appropriate penalties to ensure those who abuse animals are punished,” the party said.

“We will keep fighting until the rights of all dogs, and all animals, are guaranteed and the necessary reforms are implemented to protect them. Protecting animals is not a privilege, it is a responsibility for all of us.”
