Noel Grealish, the independent councillor for Galway West, has confirmed that Oughterard will retain its post office. The village’s current postmaster is due to retire in September, and locals are concerned about the future of Oughterard’s post office service.
Deputy Grealish said he was pleased to receive confirmation from An Post this week that the village would definitely retain a post office, having enjoyed a postal service for more than 210 years.
“Although An Post advertised for interest when the contract became vacant in September, they did not guarantee that whoever was awarded the licence would operate in the village itself, or elsewhere to serve the wider area.
“Naturally, as post offices have closed in many parts of the country and in County Galway over the past decade or so, people in the village are concerned that they may have to go elsewhere for services.
“But I was pleased to receive written confirmation from the Anthony Mail this week that the replacement service will indeed be based in Oughterard,” Deputy Grealish added.
Earlier this year, An Post advertised for those interested in operating the service, and businesses known to have applied for a licence include Keogh’s Centra supermarket.
In response to a query from Deputy Chief Constable Grealish, An Post public affairs manager Angus Rafferty said they were processing the expressions of interest and were “very confident” a new contractor could be appointed in time.
“Of course, the new contractor will be based in the village,” Mr Rafferty added.
