Hondoq ir-Rummien is now protected as final documents have been signed“By changing the 2006 Gozo and Comino Local Plan, we will ensure that the Hondoq ir-Rummien area is protected,” said Gozo and Comino Planning Minister Clint Camilleri.

The Minister said a final Hondoq plan review will be submitted to a parliamentary committee, which will result in changes to the local plan to remove the possibility of individuals or companies submitting applications to develop in the area.

He added that the more than two-decade saga has now come to an end so that everyone can continue to enjoy the Hondok area.Hondoq ir-Rummien is now protected as final documents have been signedEarlier this year, the government declared the site a Special Protection Area. Minister Camilleri said, “This is the highest level of protection and environmental preservation provided by our country’s environmental laws. By protecting the area, the government has legally and officially recognized the natural importance of the area, which is rich in biodiversity, with many different habitats, such as heathland, and protected species, such as mature carob and olive trees.”

Mayor Paul Buttigieg said that after more than 20 years of legal battles, the dream of many people is now a reality, as the beach and its surroundings will continue to be available for public enjoyment after the final document was signed today and submitted to the parliamentary committee.

He thanked the Government, the entities and all those involved who had worked on the case, which has now been closed.
