The Lagos State Building Control Authority has warned residents not to erect structures or conduct commercial activities under high voltage power lines anywhere in the state.

A statement on Thursday said the warning was given by the agency’s General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, during a meeting with representatives of the Bale of Ladigboye and Arewa communities in Ikorodu.

According to the statement, the residents were visiting the office of the Chairman seeking approval to trade on a piece of land granted to them in Ladigboye community in Ikorodu area of Lagos, which is within the reach of high voltage power lines.

Oki urged Lagosians to be vigilant against electromagnetic radiation generated by electrical installations as it poses a threat to the lives of occupants and others.

He said: “The state Urban and Regional Planning and Development Act not only prohibits the construction of buildings under overhead wires, but also stipulates the distance that should be maintained between properties and public facilities such as high-voltage cables.

“Safety and protection of life are the most important issues here and we cannot let urbanism or material interests take over and allow illegal practices to continue. Please ensure that your buildings are not under high-voltage wires and stop doing business in unauthorized places such as under power lines or on drainage routes.”

Last month, two women were electrocuted in the FESTAC area of Lagos during heavy rains.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in an article on X.com.

He said the victims lived in sheds under high-voltage power lines, which caught fire due to lightning strikes.
