MOGADISHU (HOL) — A Somali government soldier shot and killed a manual laborer, Ismail Ali Mohammed, in Mogadishu’s Hama Jabab district on Friday night over a dispute over less than 0.25 cents, according to eyewitnesses.
The victim, a father of four, reportedly had an argument with soldiers over 3,000 Somali shillings, which led to the soldiers shooting and killing Mohammed before fleeing the scene.
The victim’s family called on the government to ensure the soldier is brought to justice. Mohammed’s wife made a moving appeal to local media, stressing that her husband was killed over a trivial matter and urging government leaders to arrest the fugitive soldier.
“We ask the government and the public to help bring the killer to justice. He killed an innocent man who was just trying to feed his family,” one resident told the outlet. “This man was killed in front of witnesses, but people are afraid to speak out. Justice must be served.”
The incident mirrors a similar case before a Somali military court in 2022 Sentencing A policeman was sentenced to death for killing a civilian over a dispute over a lighter. The policeman, Mohammed Abdulkadir Sheikh Ibrahim, was convicted and shot for the murder of businessman Abdullahi Ali in the town of Afgoye, 30 km southwest of Mogadishu.
