“We must adjust the salaries of civil servants at all costs. Until our salaries are adjusted, MPs and ministers are not truly representing the people they are supposed to represent,” MP Bakari K. Badger said during the second adjournment debate of the Ordinary Session.
He added: “We cannot continue to give bonuses to civil servants and call it a salary. Some are paid 6,500 dirhams a month, which is less than 100 euros, which is equivalent to an hour’s wage in other parts of the world.”
MP Badjie further stressed that “the salary level in our country is low” and said that according to evaluation and statistics, the salary of first-level government workers “is not less than 19,000 dalasis”.
“As MPs, we, like many young people serving in public office, are against the judicial remuneration bill. But we should be determined to improve their lives by adjusting the remuneration structure so that they get a better income,” he said, adding: “We should consider how inflation is constantly draining the country. Currently 1 euro is worth 74.25 dirhams. This affects our economy and leads to an increase in the prices of goods and other necessities; therefore, there is no doubt that salaries should be increased.”
Onolabe called on everyone to work together to formulate practical policies “because governance is all about critical thinking and problem solving”.
“The funds should be reinvested in the right areas to improve the lives of Gambians,” he urged. “We are neither anti-government nor pro-government; on the contrary, we are against corruption, laziness and related things. If you do well, we will applaud you; but if you fail, we will hold you accountable.”
He urged the government to invest in education, especially research. “If we invest in research, we will reap the benefits. We should be bold in allocating enough budget to the Ministry of Higher Education to improve our education system, which will eventually lead to the advancement of our country,” he said.
