The government says it is seriously lagging behind in meeting growing demand for housing in cities and urgently needs to catch up to meet the high demand for home ownership.
In the 2024-2025 state budget, $13.5 million out of $32.3 million is allocated for the formalization of information settlement.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Prof Biman Prasad said that in order to increase the supply of affordable housing, the government has invited bids from the private sector to develop and construct 3,000 houses on five Housing Authority sites.
These are in Nepani, Raiwaqa, David, Winebook and Tavakubu.
Prof. Prasad said this would cater for the commencement of ongoing projects in Sakoja, Tavera, Field Four, Torre as well as Valewakia in Ba and Vunika in Labasa.
“We have provided $5.5 million to continue providing the first homebuyer grant.”
“The capital grants totalling $7.9 million will be used for the construction of Veikoba Bridge, support for the Housing Authority’s residential land development in Valelevu, subsidies for the Public Rent Board, expansion of the Koroipita Model Town Development Project and grants for Habitat for Humanity,” he added.
