A Google ship has arrived in French Polynesia, ready to lay five undersea data cables as part of a major project announced a few months ago.
The first step is for the Google ship to study the seafloor and plan the best route, taking environmental factors into account.
The multimillion-dollar project was also unanimously approved this week by the French Polynesia territorial parliament.
Moetai Brotherson of French Polynesia said the first task of the Google ship was to survey the seafloor to “determine the correct path to lay the cable” in order to meet environmental requirements.
He said French Polynesia was chosen as the location for Google’s project because “our unique geographical location in the heart of the South Pacific makes it an ideal location for a project like this.”
He said that since the strategic project became public, he had been approached by several large companies expressing interest in developing digital operations in French Polynesia.
He said the laying of the five cables will not only increase French Polynesia’s existing bandwidth by 50 times, but will also make French Polynesia a strategically important hub for the entire Pacific region.
