González Urrutia thanks OAS for requesting release of election records

On Friday, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Venezuelan authorities to “expeditiously” release election records.

The non-binding text was submitted on behalf of the United States and co-sponsors Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Suriname and Uruguay.

The resolution urges the National Electoral Council (CNE) to “promptly publish the record of voting results for the presidential election at the level of each polling station” and to “respect the fundamental principle of popular sovereignty by verifying the results of the vote impartially” in order to guarantee the transparency, credibility and legitimacy of the process.

Additionally, it stresses the importance of “securing and preserving all equipment used in the election process, including all printed minutes and results, to protect the entire chain of custody of the process.”

The text also calls on all parties concerned to “refrain from any actions that could undermine the peaceful resolution of this crisis and respect the sovereign will of the Venezuelan electorate.”

According to a statement signed in Santo Domingo on Friday, 22 countries including Spain and the European Union also demanded the “immediate publication of all original minutes” and an “impartial and independent” verification of the results, which is what González Urrutia and Machado value.
