According to the 2024 Global Peace Index report, Madagascar ranks second among the most peaceful countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, ranking 44th.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) world ranking is an in-depth analysis of more than 160 countries, measuring the degree of pacifism through 23 key indicators. Among them, we list the level of terrorism, access to guns, the level of crime, the death rate caused by (armed) conflicts and even political instability. The score does not take into account threats posed by natural disasters or even health security.

The GPI is a benchmark of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world, developed by the Australian think tank the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

This year, Mauritius is just one place ahead of Madagascar. Iceland ranks first in the world for the gap between peace, security and stability. Ireland and Austria round out the podium. All three countries have enviable well-being, and their people are among the happiest in the world. France rises to 86th place and Canada to 132nd. In the Arab world, the United Arab Emirates ranks 53rd and Morocco 78th.
