While the time frame has yet to be confirmed, Scott has previously revealed that Lucius has lived in the woods for 15 years with no contact with his mother (Nelson), who he thought was dead. The film will likely pick up where the original film left off and go on for nearly 20 years.

Plot details remain under wraps, but a preview of an unfinished trailer premiered at CinemaCon in April 2024, showing a blood-soaked Mezcal fighting multiple gladiators, as well as baboons and rhinos.

The original film is set in 180 AD and tells the story of Maximus returning home after leading the Roman army to victory.
