One of England’s greatest ever footballers is launching a new kit for Gibraltar Football Club this season.

Sir Geoff Hurst has unveiled a new black kit for Gibraltar Lions Football Club, the professional club he helped found in 1966.

Gibraltar Lions Football Club, whose club crest features the famous Three Lions, contacted the Football Association to request the use of the emblem the year England won their first and only World Cup title.

Since then, the club has proudly worn the iconic Three Lions jersey for the past 58 years, incorporating it into its own unique club crest, alongside the club’s name, 1966 (the year the club was founded) and the Latin word Output is zero – ‘Don’t give in to anything’.

Now, for the first time ever, legendary striker Hurst is wearing the jersey of the club he founded.

The striking new black and orange away kit, which includes a lion graphic and a nod to 1966, is part of a new range of kits released by the Gibraltar Football League club.

“To be honest, I never knew this club was formed because of what we’ve achieved – it’s amazing that it’s happened and it’s still going on,” Hurst said.

“I think it’s great that anything we do at the national level has an impact across the country and beyond.

“The club has ambitions to get into Europe and it would be fantastic if we could achieve that, what an achievement that would be.

“Unbelievable. If a club like Gibraltar Lions can qualify, why can’t they?

“It’s a great aspiration, they have a great coach and owner, a good structure in place, there’s no reason they can’t achieve it and it wouldn’t be surprising if a team like the Lions qualified for Europe.

“Seeing the Three Lions on the crest definitely brings back some great memories. It means a lot. It’s the only time we’ve done it (win the World Cup) and it’s amazing, it makes you realise what a huge achievement it was at the time and now, 58 years on, people stop me in the street and still want to talk to me about it.

“You fully understand how important that game was and still is, even more so now because we haven’t won it since. If we had won it recently then our glory would have faded into the memory, but that’s not the case so we’re still there.

“In a way, I owe a lot of my work to that game. Also, sadly, I was the only player still on the field.

“If they want an English player who has played in a World Cup final, there’s only one of us left!”

Lions Gibraltar FC has entered a new era after being bought and taken over by Mark Palmer, a professional in the English football world and a board member of a professional club in the UK.

Palmer took over at the Gibraltar Lions with ambitions to usher in an exciting new era for the club, one that would have the potential to compete for qualification for the Champions League and Europa League every season.

Palmer said: “I am honoured and delighted that Sir Geoff Hurst, one of English football’s greatest legends, will be part of this new era in the club’s history, his hat trick not only helped England win the 1966 World Cup trophy but also inspired a group of people to start a football club that would eventually qualify for UEFA European competitions in a professional league.

“A huge thank you to Sir Geoff and our principal club partner OLBG for making this possible”.

The club will kick off the new season on August 18 against current Europa League qualifiers FCB Magpies, with professional matches in the league free to all Gibraltar residents.

The home kit is made by VX3 and the Gibraltar Lions will wear orange jerseys with white trim, while the goalkeeper will wear green.

The club’s main sponsor is Online Betting Guide (OLBG), the new jerseys are inspired by their color scheme.
