Contaminated soil dug up during the construction of the King’s Road Tunnel under Gibraltar’s runway could end up in a landfill in Spain, an environmental group has said.

The waste treatment centre at the former Arenas de Castrillon mine is designed to produce recycled aggregate from Gibraltar’s demolition work “with the aim of improving living conditions for the local population and strengthening the good relations between Spain and the United Kingdom”, according to a technical report published by the Gibraltar government.
However, despite not having the equipment to handle toxic waste, environmentalists claim the demolition materials contain aviation fuel, heavy metals and petrochemicals.

It is thought that the recycled aggregate produced at the centre will be used for land reclamation as part of Gibraltar’s controversial €1 billion East End project.
Vidmar ecologists in action insists that the ambitious new port and commercial centre be carved out within the Mediterranean Special Protection Area (ZEC).
Environmental groups in Andalusia have reported on the extraction of rock from the Utrera Mountains in Casares for land reclamation.
They claim the area contains unique fossils and traces of Paleolithic human habitation, as well as unique species such as the Egyptian vulture and the white-tailed eagle.
TNG Global Foundation paid €95 million to the Gibraltar government last year to secure the rights for the massive development.
