Tonight, the Carolina Giants lost to the Santurce Cangrejeros 97-81 in a game held at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan as part of the final competition of the 2024 National Super Basketball season.
After the setback, Carolina continues to rank second in Region B with an 18-14 record, tied with Criollos de Caguas at 17-13. Meanwhile, Santurce improved its record to 17-14.
Carolina went up 50-44 in the second set and went into halftime, but the Crustaceans led 12-5 in the third set, the final push that turned the score around and defined the game.
When the two sides were tied at 57, Jared Sullinger started to attack and changed the score to 59-57. Then, Will Barton made a long shot and the score was 62-57.
Scottie James then made two free throws to bring the visitors within 62-59, but Santurcino scored another point on a free throw from Sullinger.
With the game score at 63-59, Maldonado hit a floater to extend the lead to 65-59. Kevin Maura responded with a three-pointer, but Sullinger tied the Capitals with two baskets to bring the score to 69-62 and never looked back at the scoreboard.
Sullinger had 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Angel Matias was the best player for Santurcino with 30 points and seven assists. Barton also contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds.
In the losing effort, Yomar Cruz was Carolina’s leading scorer with 15 points, followed by James with 13 and Quinndary Weatherspoon with 12 points.
Carolina will return to action on Wednesday when they host the Vaqueros de Bayamón at the Guillermo Angulo Stadium beginning at 8:00 PM.
