Germany’s top prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation into a knife attack in the western city of Solingen that left three people dead.
A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office told the German news agency dpa that they were investigating a main suspect who turned himself in on suspicion of joining the Islamic State terrorist militia. Islamic State previously said the stabbing was carried out by one of its members.
German police have detained what they say is a “real suspect” in connection with the Solingen knife attack that left three people dead, North Rhine-Westphalia state Interior Minister Herbert Reul told broadcaster ARD on Saturday evening.
Police said the suspect has admitted responsibility for the attack and is being questioned.
The attack took place on Friday evening at a market square in the city center, where a live music stage had been set up for a diverse festival celebrating Solingen’s 650th anniversary.
The victims of the attack were two men, aged 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman. Eight other people were injured, four of them seriously, according to local police chief Thorsten Fleiss. Fleiss said the attacker apparently chose the victims at random but appeared to be aiming for their necks.
