Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Grapetritis stressed the need to restart the Cyprus dialogue in the context of the UN Security Council decision and to take advantage of the opportunities created by improved relations between Greece and Turkey, during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Brussels on Thursday.
According to a Greek diplomatic source, during a meeting between Mr. Gerapetridis and Mr. Fidan on the sidelines of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, the Greek foreign minister “stressed the need to restart dialogue on the UN Security Council’s decision and take advantage of the opportunities presented by improved relations between Greece and Turkey”.
The one-hour meeting, held at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the Council of Europe, also discussed Greek-Turkish relations and Turkey’s European prospects.
According to a Greek diplomatic source, “The Greek Foreign Minister stressed that Greece supports Turkey’s European perspective, but supports European law, the sovereignty and sovereign rights of all member states, as well as the Common Foreign Policy and the EU Security Policy. Greater coordination between Turkey and the EU is needed in this regard.”
“During the debate on Greek-Turkish relations, Mr. Gerapetridis, on behalf of Turkey, raised all the issues that have caused tensions in the previous period, pointing out the need to create a good atmosphere, avoid tensions and respect international law”, notes a diplomatic source.
Finally, the upcoming meeting between the Greek and Turkish leaders in New York, which will discuss the timetable and next steps for the dialogue, was discussed.
