US automaker General Motors (GM) plans to cut more than 1,000 jobs in its software and services division as part of a restructuring aimed at improving operational efficiency in the unit. TASR informed of this according to a report by CNBC.
The cuts, which will affect about 600 jobs at GM’s technical campus near Detroit, come less than six months after management changes, including the departure of former Apple CEO Mike Abbott from the automaker for health reasons.
A GM spokesman said in an emailed statement that the automaker is working to speed up and simplify operations as part of its preparation for the future. This requires bold decisions and prioritizing investments that will have the greatest impact on its performance. As a result, it is reducing certain teams.
GM declined to disclose the total number of planned job cuts, but a person familiar with the matter confirmed that more than 1,000 employees will lose their jobs, including 600 in Warren, Mich. Affected employees were notified Monday morning.
The layoffs represent about 1.3% of the company’s global workforce of 76,000 at the end of last year, of which the automaker has 53,000 employees in the United States.
The layoffs come as automakers try to cut costs and, in many cases, increase staffing amid fears of an industry recession, while spending billions of dollars to shift to all-electric vehicles and so-called software-defined vehicles.
