From uniforms to state-of-the-art weapons. Rapid procurement of all types of equipment is important for the Ministry of Defence to meet the world’s ever-changing threats. Today, around 300 buyers gathered at the Voldorpburg in Utrecht to celebrate Defence Procurement Day. Together they brainstormed how to speed up the purchasing process through smart innovations. The Ministry of Defence has already increased its procurement volume by 57% by 2023 compared to the previous year.

Armed Forces Commander General Onno Eichelsheim specifically encouraged managers to move faster when purchasing equipment.
“When it comes to everything we hold dear, procurement is at the forefront. Speed is the key word. Buying from the shelf. No longer having to go through lengthy processes, the product is 10% better. What matters is that our warehouses are full and Ukrainians can hold on. I strongly urge managers to support their employees in this regard.”

More efficient decision-making can also speed up the procurement process. Defence Procurement Director Roselinde Wijman gives an example.
She talked about “users at the wheel” of defense projects. Users themselves order equipment from suppliers. They also manage their own wallets. This makes the procurement process more efficient.

New technologies can also play a role. Trend watcher Richard van Hooijdonk gave the audience a glimpse into the future.
