Retired General, Olu Bajowa, has cautioned all Nigerians to refrain from inflammatory statements that fan the flames of war and threaten national unity and peace.
In a statement on Tuesday, Bajova expressed displeasure over unpatriotic remarks and actions during the nationwide protests.
He called on all Nigerians across social, political, religious, tribal and ethnic lines to consider the serious consequences of such statements.
The retired general said he was particularly concerned about the level of violence in protests in parts of the country.
He said those advocating war were acting out of ignorance and short-sighted sentiment.
No one can predict the outcome of a war, he said, because no individual or group has a monopoly on violence.
The veteran politician said Nigeria must do everything possible to avoid falling into the trap of its enemies at home and abroad.
“Let us learn from the recent experience of our fellow African country, Libya, which was once a model of a prosperous African economy but was drawn into an avoidable war.
“Let Nigerians protect Nigeria and let those who gleefully waved certain foreign flags during the recent protests know that no country loves Nigeria more than we Nigerians do.

“No country is immune to challenges of one kind or another.
“God Almighty is pleased that he has positioned Nigeria as the leader of the black race.
“We are also a potential light for the entire world, and we must do everything in our power to keep the light of this great country shining,” he said.
The retired general commended the security agencies and services for the good job they were doing in handling the protests.
He said they deserved his respect for their professionalism in managing early warning signs and preventing the country from sliding into anarchy.
“My position is in no way intended to downplay the serious economic hardship that ordinary citizens are currently facing, but rather to encourage us to stand strong together as one indivisible nation during these trying times.
“We should accept it as nothing more than a sacrifice of a phase in our country’s history.
“Without sounding political, I believe our elders and leaders at all levels should seize opportunities like this to convey a message of hope to our people instead of spreading despair and hopelessness.”
