A graffiti painting of Gavin Sheehan being called a “rat” appeared in Cork this week.

Gardaí were called to the Shankiel area of Cork at 5.40pm on Friday following reports that masked men had smashed the windows of offender Gavin Sheehan’s home before fleeing the scene on a motorbike.

Shortly after the incident, at 6.10pm, an innocent pedestrian was knocked down on nearby Churchfield Road.

It is understood the victim, aged over 60, suffered multiple serious injuries including a collapsed lung, a broken neck, a broken pelvis and multiple leg fractures.

Gardaí later arrested a man (in his 20s) to cooperate with the investigation into the incident, but he was released without charge and a file was sent to the DPP.

But now, a police spokesman has confirmed that a suspect is due to appear in court this morning.

He said: “The man (in his 20s) arrested in relation to this incident has now been charged.

“He is expected to appear at a special sitting of Cork City Magistrates’ Court today (Saturday 31 August 2024) at 12 noon.”

Gavin Sheehan (33) was released from Castlereagh Prison earlier this month after serving an eight-year sentence for shooting innocent 21-year-old Ciara Sheehan (no relation) in the neck in May 2016.

Sheehan denies four charges relating to possession and discharge of a firearm and the most serious charge of causing injury to the young woman.

Cork Crown Court heard that earlier that evening Sheehan attacked a young man, Dylan Cunningham, in a fish and chip shop in Blackpool, and later that evening windows were broken at Sheehan’s family home in Laurel Ridge.

Then, around 1:30 a.m., Dylan Cunningham’s girlfriend, Ciara Sheehan, was at the Cunningham home in Hollywood Estates on Blarney Road when she heard a loud bang and realized she had been shot.

She fell to the ground with a gunshot wound to the neck.

She underwent emergency surgery to remove a bullet from her neck, which had lodged in the muscle but had not punctured any major blood vessels.

Graffiti was spray-painted on a wall in Cork this week with Sheehan labelled a “rat”, alluding to his past as a self-proclaimed police informant.

At a court hearing in 2017, Sheen’s lawyers claimed he had been an informant for the Irish police, tipping off police on drug dealers, gun traffickers and common criminals.

Sheehan’s lawyer told the court: “I received instructions … that for two years up to Christmas 2015 he had been acting as an informant for the Garda Síochána.

“During that time, he was an informant for the Mayfield Police Department (name) and he provided intelligence to the police. He provided lists of people involved in drug dealing, gun dealing and general criminal activity.”
