P-au-P, August 15, 2024 (AlterPresse) – Plan International urges national authorities to prioritize the protection of Haitian children on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, Monday, August 19, 2024. A press release noted by the online agency AlterPresse.
She said she condemned all serious violations of children’s rights in the context of armed conflict.
“Children and adolescents feel unsafe in shelters and express fears of violence, threats and attacks by armed groups. They are increasingly concerned about large-scale thefts, kidnappings and disappearances related to human trafficking.”
Furthermore, Plan International regrets that the increased insecurity, violence and political instability faced by civilians have severely impacted supply chains, production, transport and access to basic services such as health, education, drinking water and basic sanitation.
Ensuring humanitarian aid for Haiti
Plan International also called for humanitarian aid to the country, where thousands of displaced people, including children, face dire conditions.
Nearly half of the country’s population faces severe food insecurity, with 1.64 million people in emergency stage and 3.32 million in crisis.
She added that by November 2024, 277,000 children under five will suffer from acute malnutrition, stressing that the humanitarian crisis in Haiti will continue to worsen.
Plan International urgently calls on all parties concerned to immediately cease violence and indiscriminate attacks affecting civilians.
“The number of internally displaced persons has reached a record high of 580,000, of whom 54 percent are women, including girls. Their living conditions are becoming increasingly precarious due to escalating violence and natural disasters.”
According to available data, in the second quarter of 2024 (April to June), there were 1,379 killings by armed groups.
In addition, at least 428 people were kidnapped for ransom during this period. (Published on April 19, 2024 at 12:45)
