Gambia ranked fourth most generous country in the world

The World Giving Index is one of the largest giving surveys ever conducted, with this year’s study covering 142 countries and interviewing millions of people around the world since 2009.

Indonesia is the most generous country in the world, with Kenya in second place and Singapore in third.

Globally, a record 4.3 billion people helped a stranger, gave their time or donated to a charitable cause last month, according to the Charities Aid Foundation’s 2024 World Giving Index.

Indonesia is the world’s most generous country for the seventh consecutive year, with 90% of Indonesians donating to charity and 65% volunteering their time. Kenya is the second most generous country, moving up from third place last year. Singapore climbed 19 spots to third place, with its overall index score rising to 61% from 49% last year. Singapore’s positive results are the result of recent government initiatives to strengthen philanthropy and volunteerism.

This year’s index, which covers data from 142 countries, asks people three questions: whether they have helped a stranger, donated money or participated in a charity in the past month.

The 2024 CAF World Giving Index also found that:

The top ten countries include only two of the world’s largest economies (Indonesia and the United States), while one of the world’s poorest countries, The Gambia, ranks fourth.
Morocco had the largest year-on-year increase in donations in the world, with the interviews conducted after a devastating earthquake struck central Morocco in September 2023. In 2022, only 2% of people donated to charity, but last year that rose to 18%, and volunteering doubled from 8% to 16%.
Greece is the biggest riser this year, having risen in the rankings consistently since 2013. When it comes to helping strangers, Greece scores particularly high – well above the European average, especially among young people.
Ukraine, Indonesia, Chad, Russia and China have made the biggest improvements over the past decade, with each country increasing its ranking by 25 percentage points or more.

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), which celebrates its centenary this year, connects donors with charitable causes around the world. CAF donates over £1 billion to charities every year.
