The Independent Anti-Corruption Office (Bianco) has appointed a new director-general. Gaby Nestor Razakamanantsoa was appointed as the head of the anti-corruption agency yesterday at the Council of Ministers. Razakamanantsoa, who served as regional director of Bianco for seven years and director of investigations for three years, takes over the agency from Laza Andrianirina for a non-renewable five-year term.
The senior official of Bianco saw his name appear among three applications selected by an ad hoc recruitment committee. The arrival of Gaby Nestor Razakamanantsoa comes at an important moment when public confidence in state institutions must be restored. According to a press release from the Presidency of the Republic, one of the main tasks of the new Director-General will be to intensify the fight against corruption, a scourge that erodes the credibility and functioning of the public service.
In the recently published report on its activities for 2023, Bianco reported that 3,147 complaints were received during the year, a slight decrease compared to the 3,705 complaints recorded in 2022. Of these cases, 1,404 were investigated, resulting in the transfer of 556 files to the competent judicial authorities. This figure shows a significant dynamic and represents an increase compared to the 477 cases referred to the courts last year.
Bianco’s efforts have resulted in the prosecution of 1,831 people. This illustrates the extent of the work carried out to defend the integrity of the institution. Of these, 588 people have been arrested, 95 of whom have been arrested and 122 have been placed under judicial supervision.
Raza Kamanantsoa’s appointment comes at a time when the fight against corruption is more important than ever. Expectations are high that he will be able to accomplish this complex mission and demonstrate his determination to turn things around and strengthen citizens’ trust in institutions.
