The President of the Republic welcomed the decision adopted by the United Nations Security Council in New York on July 29, 24 hours after the complete lifting of the arms embargo on the Central African Republic. Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who returned to France from Paris on Wednesday, July 31, after attending the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, welcomed the measure, which he considered an obstacle for the defence and security forces to carry out their sovereign duties.
The tenants of the Renaissance Palace welcomed first his diplomatic feat, which allowed the full lifting of the arms embargo on the Central African Republic. This sanctions regime was imposed by UN Security Council Resolution 2127 in 2013, when the country was experiencing bloody armed violence after the Seleka coalition came to power. With the full lifting, this restriction no longer targets the national army, but armed groups.
‘A long battle’
“This has been a long process, a long struggle. If the embargo in 2013 had its justification, it is no longer justified since the restoration of constitutional order. Many people, regional and sub-regional organizations oppose this embargo which puts a strain on our defense and security forces. They are deprived of the means of territorial defense,” Faustin Achanchi Touadera said.
Central Africa’s number one expressed gratitude to all entities that contributed to the final lifting of the embargo.
“We fully appreciate the decision to lift the embargo. I would like to extend my greetings and congratulations to the people of Central Africa. This is also an opportunity to congratulate our defense and security forces… I would also like to congratulate the media for their work in raising awareness and conveying information about the real situation in the Central African Republic.” The heads of state of Central African countries were delighted.
In addition, the UN Security Council condemned and requested the Group of Experts, within the framework of its mandate, to pay special attention to the analysis of transnational trafficking networks that continue to supply armed groups in the Central African Republic and the above-mentioned regions. All these threats are related to explosive devices.
