Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Odu and three members of the state House of Assembly on Saturday failed to attend the state congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt, which was reportedly backed by the governor’s former godfather, Nysome Wike.
The meeting was overseen by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), and attended by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Wike, but not the governor and his deputy.
Fubala’s absence clearly shows that although the PDP board, led by its chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabala, is on a peace mission to resolve the protracted crisis in the Rivers State chapter of the PDP, the divisions within the party are far from over.
Wike, who spoke at the event, said if any state governor wanted to interfere in the political affairs of Rivers State, he could bring crisis to the state.
“If the governor says he doesn’t want us, will you commit suicide? Will you flee the party you built? We are party members, we have taken over our party. We did it, we did it in 2023, the same God will be with us in 2027.
“Don’t let anyone be intimidated. I know how it feels when you work hard but end up being pushed aside by others. I know how bad you feel. But again, not every business you start will be profitable. Think of this as one of those businesses where you invest and lose money. But that won’t stop you from continuing to work hard, invest in your future and make a profit.
“They say we are finished. They are finished. I promise all of you that as long as we are alive, nobody will take this party structure away from us. I heard some governors say they will take the party structure away and give it to someone else. I pity those governors because I will put the fire in their states. When God gives you peace and you say you don’t want peace, then take whatever you see. I heard they made some money from this signing bonus and that’s why they want to interfere in my state. Be prepared to face everything because I have the power.
“I can do the same thing in your state. I don’t care whether you are from Bauchi or not. Your hands will be burned. You will never sleep well in your state. You will see political crisis in your state. When I started, don’t say I am the one who destroyed PDP.
“I heard these unstable people, we know they are joining APP. Let them wait, wait till the time comes, let them face us. They thought I will come and beg them. Let them go and see what is happening in Abuja. If I say today that I will switch to another political party, it will be a tsunami. We have said that I will stay with PDP.”
The Congress Party has nominated Chief Chukuemeka Aaron as the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.
