The government has decided to provide a temporary allowance of Rs 3,000 to all government pensioners from September, which is currently Rs 2,500.

Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said steps have been taken to add Rs 3,000 to the current interim allowance of Rs 2,500 given to all civil servant retirees. Hence, from September, all government retirees will be given Rs 5,500.

Following the President’s directive, an expert committee chaired by UR Seneviratne was recently appointed to study the issue of pay disparity in civil servants and formulate related future revisions.

The state minister further mentioned that this interim allowance will be paid to retired civil servants before the revised pay structure is implemented in 2025, based on a review by an expert committee.

According to statistics, there are about 700,000 retirees in India, so the government will have to incur an additional expenditure of Rs 8.4 billion to provide this temporary allowance in 2024. Considering the current financial difficulties faced by retired civil servants, the government has taken the step of providing this temporary allowance despite the challenges of managing the national budget, the state minister added. Siyambalapitiya also said that this allowance is a short-term quick solution to solve the financial difficulties of retirees.

Meanwhile, yesterday (2) morning, the State Minister held a special meeting with officials of the National Movement for Civil Service Pensioners to discuss how to eliminate the pension gap and increase the interest rates for senior citizens.
