The Democrat, known for his promotion of progressive causes, pushed to make Juneteenth a federal holiday

Longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who helped lead federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and make Juneteenth a national holiday, has died at age 74.

Jackson Lee, who suffered from pancreatic cancer, died Friday night in Houston surrounded by her family, her chief of staff Lily Conley confirmed.

The Democrat has represented her Houston district and the nation’s fourth-largest city since 1995. She previously had breast cancer and announced Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis June 2nd.

Jackson Lee visited the Bahamas in October 2019 to meet with U.S. and Bahamian officials to discuss ongoing relief efforts for Hurricane Dorian, which caused extensive damage to Abaco and Grand Bahama, the two main islands in the northern Bahamas.

May her soul rest in peace.
