French police have detained a man suspected of attempting to set fire to a synagogue in the southern French city of La Grande-Motte, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Saturday. TASR reported the incident based on reports from Reuters and AFP.
Darmanin reported the arrest of the suspect in the arson attack on the X social network, but did not provide any details.
Two cars caught fire near the synagogue on Saturday morning after a gas cylinder exploded in one of them. A police officer was injured. The fire destroyed the main door of the synagogue, where five people, including the rabbi, were staying. None of them were injured.
The interior minister ordered an immediate increase in the security presence in front of the synagogue. X called the incident a clear criminal act on social networks and expressed support for the Jewish community.
“The fight against anti-Semitism is an ongoing battle,” said the country’s President Emmanuel Macron, adding that authorities would do everything they could to find those responsible for the act.
La Grande-Motte is located about 25 kilometers east of the city of Montpellier. It has about 8,500 residents and is a popular seaside resort, according to AFP. More than 100,000 tourists visit the village each year.
